PMU LICENSING & REGULATIONS
Becoming a Licensed Permanent Makeup Artist
In the USA, micropigmentation is considered a body art and regulated at the local level by the cities, towns, or states. In most places, licensing is issued by the Board of Health/Public Health Commission.
In our experience, most localities require formal training in micropigmentation β typically the 100-hour certificate that meets the requirements of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) and/or the American Academy of Micropigmentation (AAM) β such as ours.
Some localities also require an apprenticeship where a new practitioner acquires experience by working under a licensed practitioner/instructor before obtaining a permit to practice on their own. (Yes, we offer this to our students!) Learn about our Apprenticeships & Mentoring here.
Massachusetts Regulations
Vary by city or town. This is the town you plan to work in and not the town you live in. View your town/cityβs regulations below.
*If your town is not listed or there is no link, contact the Board of Health to see if they allow permanent makeup establishments, and ask what their requirements are.
